- BRONZE (2015) Sommelier Wine Awards 2016
Gabriele Tacconi is the winemaker responsible for producing Ruffino’s Chianti, a wine sold in 80 countries around the world. This was the first wine produced by founders and cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino in the 1870s; a wine that was winning Gold medals in France in the 1890s. When Chianti became a DOCG in 1984, it was a bottle of Ruffino Chianti that wore the first warranty strip, bearing the number 00000001.
Alongside the production of their popular Chianti, Ruffino produce wine from a number of estates they own around Tuscany, each with its own agronomist and winemaker. Since 2008, the winemaking team has been joined by consultant winemaker Carlo Ferrini, the winner of World Winemaker of the Year in 2008, awarded by ‘Wine Enthusiast Magazine’. Much work has been done in both vineyard and winery in order to evolve each estate wine’s style to match the specific characteristics of the terroir and region.
The Santedame Estate, which is situated at a very high altitude in the Chianti Classico region, provides the grapes for the excellent Chianti Classico Santedame. The vineyards here are located in a region called the Golden Basin and have a superb mesoclimate. The Lodola Nuova winery is one of the most modern in Tuscany, having been completely refurbished in 2004. Here the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made in a cellar constructed on three levels, allowing gravity to gently move the wine, eliminating the possibility of ‘wine shock’ caused by pumping.
