Sponsored post in partnership with Piper-Heidsieck.
Piper-Heidsieck is one of the oldest houses in the region, dating back to 1777. Over those years, the Champagnes have been enjoyed by the likes of Marie Antoinette and Marilyn Monroe. Today, the house benefits from the oversight of winemaker Régis Camus. He is one of only five Chef de Cave appointed by the CIVC (Comite Interprofessionel du Vin de Champagne) that decide when the harvest can start - not to mention an eight-time winner of IWC Sparkling Winemaker of the Year!
With the mercurial Régis moving on to new projects, we've caught up with Piper Heidsieck Brand Ambassador to the UK, Simon Stockton to find out what makes Piper so special.
How have Piper Heidsieck wines developed since Régis Camus has been the chef de cave?
Regis immediately began to improve quality on several levels. He started ageing the champagnes a lot longer on lees (between 3-4 yrs for the Brut NV) as well as focussing on sourcing and growing the very best fruit from the appellation. This devotion to excellence led to Piper-Heidsieck being at the top of the tree once more, and it delights me to see this now being recognised by wine critics and sommeliers alike.
As Régis moves on to new projects what do you believe his greatest legacy to be?
His absolute dedication to making the best champagne possible and turning around the reputation of what was once a decent, rather than excellent Maison. His efforts in achieving this have seen him win IWC International Sparkling Winemaker of the Year 8 times over 9 years! His blending skill is legendary.
Why Piper and why celebrate with Piper?
One of the real joys of the Brut NV (my favourite) is how very classic it is in style, making it a truly ‘anytime’ champagne. Crunchy ripe fruit character, no oak use and tremendous harmony between sweetness/acidity and fruit/yeasty character - the hallmark of impeccable grapes, long ageing and blending skill. Piper-Heidsieck champagnes are always joyful and at home as an aperitif, with a meal or just because.
What makes Piper stand out from the rest of the pack?
A real mastery of blending led by ripe and structured Pinot Noir with over 100 base wines in the Non Vintage range. The style is classic, ripe, generous and structured.
Does the Piper-Heidsieck estate operate with a sustainable mindset?
Of course! The whole appellation is changing with regards to sustainable viticulture and Piper-Heidsieck is very much on board. Reducing waste, reducing the use of herbicides and crop coverage between rows are examples of this sustainable mindset.. Our new cellar master, Emilien Boutillat, brings this ethos with him. Sustainability is very close to his heart having worked in Australia, South Africa, Chateau Margaux and Champagne, and he’ll use his learnings to continue in this direction.
What is your favourite Piper champagne and why?
As the saying goes, it’s like choosing between your children, though it is the Brut Non-Vintage that I hold dearest. It’s so consistently brilliant and in blind tastings, continues to knock bigger brands off their perch.
