Champagne is the heart and soul of sparkling wine. With over 300 years of winemaking history dating back to the monasteries of the 17th century, Champagne has established a reputation for the world’s finest sparkling wines. Sometimes only Champagne will do, Christmas is that time.
As consumers look to trade up on their normal spending habits, Christmas represents the perfect opportunity to kick-start Champagne sales and attract high-spenders. Upping the choice and availability to consumers increases the opportunities for premiumisation. Large formats such as Magnums are a great way to heighten the sense of ceremony/special occasion and offering more Champagne by the glass or wine flights will encourage trading up from cheaper sparkling wines.
Christmas represents a time for people to really indulge and treat themselves, Champagne is a wine that symbolizes the “good life” and something that people can aspire to. Consumers are willing to pay more so why not give them the opportunity to do so?
We recommend the following to make the most of Christmas with Champagne:
- Sell Champagnes by the glass to encourage trade up from entry-level sparkling wines. 30% of consumers would drink Champagne more often if it was readily available by the glass.
- Stock magnums and different styles. Size matters with Champagne and magnums add theatre to the drinking experience, are practical for large groups and even taste better! Stocking different styles allows you to meet the needs of all your customers.
- Create Christmas displays using Champagne. If you’ve got it, you may as well flaunt it. Using Champagne as a key focus will drive the rate of sale of what is a profitable serve. 12% of consumers have bought champagne in the last 3 months, so there is a larger market interested in purchasing a bottle than many expect.
A huge 28% of the annual Champagne volume consumed over November and December alone. Ensure that you have the right range to make the most of the sales opportunity. As mentioned stocking different styles of Champagne will pay dividends, especially with the countdown to the New Year already on.
There are many champagnes to pick from in our range. We recommend stocking at least three Champagnes, a white non-vintage champagne such as Taittinger Brut Reserve, a rosé non-vintage such as Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial and a white vintage champagne such as Veuve Clicquot Vintage Réserve.
