3 Cocktails for Scotch Whisky

Whisky Cocktails

Many Scotch Whisky drinkers would look at you like you’ve ruined Christmas with talk of mixing Blended and Malt Whisky in cocktails. In truth outside of a couple of classic mixed drinks such as a Scotch and Soda or Scotch and Ginger Ale, Whisky is usually consumed unadulterated, almost like some form of cult ritual.

There’s the straight up Steve’s, the touch of water Terry’s and the black sheep in the corner drinking theirs over ice. But if you can remove all the misconceptions and opinions around how Scotch Whisky should be consumed, and keep your mind open, then there is a whole world of fantastic tasty drinks just waiting to be discovered.

Here are my top 3 Scotch Whisky cocktails:

Penicillin Cocktail

Created in 2005 at the Milk & Honey bar in New York by bartender Sam Ross. For me, this is a game changer and a drink that has changed the opinion of the role Scotch Whiskies play in modern-day cocktail culture.

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a cubed ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with Candied Ginger. Note - To produce Honey-Ginger Syrup, combine a 1:1 ratio of boiling water and honey in a pan with a 15cm (6inch) stick of fresh ginger. Simmer for 5 minutes and cool before straining to remove any solids.

Whisky Mac

Originally called the Whisky MacDonald after the man who invented the drink during his days in the India's British Raj, Colonel MacDonald. This is an old school classic that is super simple and extra tasty!

Add all ingredients to a cubed ice-filled rocks glass and stir gently to mix.

Skye Old Fashioned

A fantastic twist on the classic Old Fashioned with an added maritime influence.

Stir all ingredients over cubed ice until dilution and temperature are right. Serve in a rocks glass with an orange twist garnish.
