Last Thursday evening, we made our way over to the well-established cocktail haunt, Red Light, to attend The Bristol Syrup Company’s official launch party. We were able to find out more about their fantastic new range of cocktail syrups, which are made in the very same city that is home to Matthew Clark.
On arrival, the place was buzzing, with a hum-drum of laughter and clinking glasses. The syrups themselves, were on proud display, behind the bar, and looked right at home in a cocktail environment. The drinks menu boasted a fantastic selection of specially made cocktails. My two favourites were the ‘Clover Club’, made using the Raspberry Syrup, Death’s Door gin, lemon & egg white, as well as the ‘Corn & Oil’ cocktail, made using Falernum Syrup, Doorly’s XO rum and bitters.
The Bristol-based syrup brand is new to Matthew Clark and has been crafted specifically with bartenders in mind. I spoke with Jem Rogers, one of the co-founders, to find out more about the inception of the ‘Bristol Syrup Company’ and how the idea came about. He told me, it actually all started in Red Light when talking with Dee Davies and Danny Walker over a couple of cocktails.
Coming from a coffee industry background, and co-founder of ‘Beyond the Bean’, Jem had seen first-hand the popularity for syrups in the coffee industry. Dee is well known in the drinks industry. She launched Jinzu gin with Diageo, back in 2013, and Danny owns an independent craft gin distillery, called Psychopomp. Established following 15 years working as a cocktail bartender across the globe. All three were perfectly placed to pursue the opportunity they saw with syrups. Plugging the gap in the market for well-made and authentically produced cocktail syrups.
South West outlets, keen to get their hands on these brand new syrups, will be pleased to know that a selection of them will immediately be available through Matthew Clark, in 75cl bottles.
We see the huge potential cocktails have for UK outlets, looking to get involved in making and offering cocktails to their customer base. We’re in the process of developing plans for a Matthew Clark cocktail-focused competition, launching early in 2018, so stay tuned for more developments in the cocktail space!
