About the wine maker
Agustin Francisco Huneeus, President of Veramonte, has been surrounded by wine since his birth. He began his formal career in the wine business in 1989 at Franciscan Estate, a Napa Valley-based wine company his father ran. Relocating to his family’s native Chile for two years, he was instrumental in developing two well-known Chilean wineries. He returned to Franciscan Estate in 1996 to lead the company’s sales and marketing team.
Agustin Francisco has worked closely with his father Agustin Huneeus – wine pioneer, and visionary – in the development of the Veramonte Estate, and today speaks around the world about the growth and future of the Chilean wine industry. His passion is clear when he states, ‘Since 1990 when we planted the vineyards at Veramonte, we have been delighted to see Casablanca Valley become one of the most important appellations in Chile.’
The project has come a long way since its first harvest in 1996, recent developments include new estates in some of the best appellations of Chile, including Colchagua – a premium terroir for red varieties – the estate produces some of the Reserva and Primus red wines here.
In 2012, Rodrigo Soto joined as Chief Winemaker and began to put even more focus on the vineyards and sustainable farming; he is a committed advocate of biodynamic practices. All Veramonte’s vineyards are now farmed without the use of herbicides and chemical products, replaced with natural solutions such as cover crops and organic fertilisers. The company’s organic certification process will be completed by 2017 for all 680 hectares in Casablanca and Colchagua. The biodynamic philosophy has now reached the winery: fermentations are now carried out using the vineyards native yeasts, producing less aggressive fermentations and smoother, well-integrated wines. Veramonte also sets aside 15% of the estate to be preserved as a natural green belt.
