Ronco della Chiesa Collio, Borgo del Tiglio

Ronco della Chiesa Collio, Borgo del Tiglio

The grapes for Ronco della Chiesa are grown in the small vineyard behind the winery; the Friulano vines here are decades old and certainly would have been called ‘Tocai’ vines when they were planted! The wine definitely shows the layered intensity of these old vines on the palate. With a steep, south-westerly aspect, facing the sea some 18 miles away, the grapes ripen evenly and slowly; work in the vineyard used to be carried out by horses and the vines are very densely planted. The grapes are fermented in small 250 litre French oak barrels and the malolactic fermentation is generally avoided in order to maintain the aromatics, acidity and freshness. White flowers, apples and pears abound on the rich, soft and inviting nose. The intense, almost saline, mineral notes, and the expressiveness and generosity of the fruit makes this an outstanding wine.
