About the wine maker
Founded by two Piedmontese businessmen, Messrs. Sella and Mosca in 1899, Sella & Mosca is Sardinia’s premier estate, producing wines from both indigenous and ‘international’ varietals: notably Cabernet Sauvignon. Their vineyards stretch from the rugged mountainous island interior to the gentle coastal slopes and great care is taken to select the best terroir to match each variety’s requirements.
Situated in what could be described as the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia contains about 3% of all Italy’s vineyards. The island’s winemaking history goes back hundreds of years and has been influenced by many foreign visitors, particularly those from Catalonia who brought with them grapes such as Torbato, now unique to Sardinia and in fact Sella & Mosca’s vineyards.
The wines are clearly influenced by the amount of sun to which the grapes are exposed, with plenty of ripe fruit flavours, but are also incredibly well structured and complex. Giovanni Pinna, one of the winemaking team reveals how he couldn’t believe his good fortune when encountering the grapes for the first time, although as he says, ‘It was frightening when I realised that if I didn’t produce the very best wines from them I would have no excuses!’
