Vistalba Corte A, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

Vistalba Corte A, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

A blend of 79% Malbec, 15% Bonarda and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, the former two grown in vineyards planted in 1948, the Cabernet Sauvignon being planted in 1999. The estate’s vineyards are about 980 metres above sea level and lie in the Luján de Cuyo region surrounding the city of Mendoza. These vineyards are sustainably managed without the use of pesticides and herbicides; rye is grown as a cover crop between the rows. Manually harvested grapes reach the winery in small boxes and a traditional fermentation is carried out in concrete vats; the cap is subject to punching down and pumping over. Varieties are generally fermented separately due to different ripening and harvest dates, however, a micro-vinification is also carried out to co-ferment parcels of Malbec and Bonarda. The wine undergoes an 18 month maturation in French oak barrels, 60% new. The nose shows complex aromas of dark chocolate, prune and tobacco; the palate develops a sweet, ripe fruit theme, followed by notes of chocolate and spice.
