Ulver, Mencía Bierzo Crianza

Ulver, Mencía Bierzo Crianza

A modern interpretation of the Mencía grape variety with plenty of fruit and weight on the palate. The grapes come from low yielding bush vines that are between 50 and 100 years old, grown on quartz and slate soils in the Bierzo region in north-west Spain. Here, at altitudes of over 500 metres in a climate influenced by both humid Galicia and dry Castilla, the grapes ripen slowly until they are hand-picked. Fermented at quite low temperatures to allow the maceration to last as long as possible, the wine is aged in French oak for about a year. On the nose, there is plenty of toasty oak character overlaying a heady mix of blackberry, cassis and violet; the palate is firm but with sweet tannins and an elegant, silky finish.
