Freemark Abbey Merlot, Napa Valley

Freemark Abbey Merlot, Napa Valley

A blend of about 90% Merlot with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance made up of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec; the grapes were sourced from across Napa Valley with about a third coming from Yountville. After a 5 day cold soak, the fermentation takes place in stainless steel; the wine is aged for about 15 months in a mixture of French and American oak, 29% of the barrels being new. Opaque ruby-red, it expresses rich dark fruit aromas composed of dark cherry and plum, with notes of bay leaf and dried herbs and a milk chocolate nuance; coupled with the rich dark fruit, there is a hint of green herbs adding to the complexity. The entry and finish are very smooth with integrated fruit, again resembling black cherry.
