Costetoste Aglianico, Terre di Chieti, Fontefico

Costetoste Aglianico, Terre di Chieti, Fontefico

A selection of Aglianico grapes from the Le Coste vineyard are employed to make this wine; the vineyard is steep, with a one in four slope, and difficult to farm with. However, the stoney soils and southerly exposure produce grapes that make a muscular and concentrated wine, farming here is well worth the effort. The wine is aged for over four year: six months in stainless steel, twenty months in oak and twenty months in bottle before release. Aglianico is not often found in the Abruzzo region, and this wine’s concentrated full-bodied style is quite different to the fruit-led examples from further south in Italy. The nose shows herbal notes, with rosemary, lavender and balsam overlaying ripe, dark brooding fruit. The palate has rich plum and sour cherry notes, then minerality, followed by hints of clove and cocoa on a tannin-rich finish.
