About the wine maker
If you asked UK journalists to name a Chilean wine brand that best represents value for money, many would choose Casillero del Diablo. Matthew Jukes, journalist for The Daily Mail, calls him 'a genius and a kind one at that', in The Wine List 2007. Their wines all punch above their weights and deliver superb quality at a very reasonable price. Marcelo Papa, the Head Winemaker, may also get a mention – he was awarded Winemaker of the Year in 2005 by ‘The Chilean Wine Guide’.
Our Casillero del Diablo range comprises seven classic grape varieties; these wines are sourced from an area covering 600 kilometres from north to south, each wine is produced from fruit sourced from the most suitable vineyards for the particular grape variety.
Owning such a high number of vineyards gives Marcelo greater control over wine quality. The aromatic and white wines are produced in cool-climate and coastal vineyards while the reds are grown in the classic warmer regions.
Marcelo Papa joined Concha y Toro in 1998 and was swiftly promoted to the job of Winemaker for Casillero del Diablo. However, he is also heavily involved in the viticultural programme for the company’s extensive vineyards and is constantly on the lookout for new vineyards and regions with potential. The Limarí Valley is a personal passion and he strongly believes that this region is capable of producing truly world-class wines.
