About the wine maker
native of central valley California, Blackstone Winemaker Gary Sitton’s route in winemaking was not straightforward. Starting out to become a vet, Gary was bitten by the wine bug whilst working part-time in a small family-owned winery. After a change of direction, he then went on to study winemaking at Davis and then worked at the iconic Ravenswood winery.
Blackstone relies on strategic grape sourcing to ensure consistency of style and quality. The Winemaker’s Select grapes are sourced from over 100 carefully selected vineyards in the Central Coast, North Coast, and North Valley (Lodi) regions of California. These regions contain California’s premium wine regions; their geographical separation provides a range of climatic and soil variations that, in turn, provide Gary with a diverse palette of grapes and wines with which to blend the final wine. Blackstone wines are characterised by bright, fruity aromas, silky textures, and smooth, fruit-forward characteristics, making wines with balance that are fruit-driven.
The Blackstone Winery is a certified member of California’s Sustainable Winegrowing Program. The vision of the programme is the long-term sustainability of the California wine community. To place the concept of sustainability into the context of winegrowing, the programme defines sustainable winegrowing and winemaking practices that are sensitive to the environment, responsive to the needs and interests of society-at-large, and are economically feasible to implement and maintain.
